Things to do
Phi Phi Viewpoint
The view from the top is the image of Phi Phi: the two curved bays of Tonsai and Loh Dalum, joined by a thin strip of land, with limestone cliffs on both sides. Getting there takes a sweaty climb up hundreds of steps.
The three viewpoints
There are several viewing points on the hill east of the village. Viewpoint 1 is a landscaped garden with benches and a small café; it is the classic spot, reached after about 20 to 30 minutes of steps. Viewpoint 2 is a short walk further on and covered by the same ticket. Viewpoint 3, higher and a little further, charges a separate small fee and is usually less crowded. Fees are collected in cash at the entrance.
The hike
- Start in the villageFollow the signs for 'Viewpoint' from the lanes east of the centre. The path passes guesthouses before it starts climbing.
- The stepsMost of the way is concrete steps and steep paths. Take it slowly in the heat; there are spots to rest.
- At the topPay the entrance fee, find a rock or bench and wait for the light to change.
- Carry on or returnFrom the top, trails continue down to Ranti Bay and Loh Moo Dee. Otherwise, go back the way you came.
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunset is the classic choice, with warm light on the bays, but the top gets crowded. Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset. Sunrise is much quieter and cooler, with the sun rising behind you over the Krabi coast and the bays below slowly lighting up.
Safety and comfort
- Bring at least one litre of water per person.
- Wear shoes with grip; flip-flops slip on the steps.
- Stay behind railings and do not climb on rocky edges for photos.
- The hill is part of the tsunami evacuation route, signposted in blue.
