Monkey Beach

A small, sheltered cove on the west coast of Phi Phi Don, named after the troop of macaques that lives on the cliffs behind it. It is a favourite stop for kayakers and longtail tours.

The monkeys

The monkeys are long-tailed macaques. They have become used to people and come down to the beach in search of food. Years of feeding by tourists made some of them aggressive, and bites happen. Keep your distance, do not feed them, keep food and bags out of sight and do not smile with bared teeth, which they see as a threat.

Getting there

Rent a kayak on Loh Dalum and paddle north along the cliffs, about 30 to 45 minutes on calm water, or take a longtail. Many Phi Phi Leh tours also stop here. See Kayaking.

Swimming and snorkelling

The water in the cove is usually calm and clear, with some fish around the rocks at both ends. Watch out for boats arriving and leaving.
