Getting around Phi Phi
Phi Phi Don has no roads, no cars and no scooters for rent. That is a big part of its charm. You get around on foot, by longtail boat and, for your luggage, on a porter's push cart.
Walking
Tonsai village and Loh Dalum are a maze of narrow paved lanes, all within a few minutes' walk of each other. From the village, signposted paths lead up to the Viewpoint, along the coast towards Long Beach and over the hills to Ranti Bay and Loh Moo Dee. Paths outside the village are steep, rocky and unlit. See Hiking trails.
Longtail boats and water taxis
Longtail boats are the island's taxis. You find them at Tonsai Pier, along Tonsai Bay and on Loh Dalum beach. Many stands display a board with set prices to the main beaches. Shared boats to Long Beach leave when they fill up; private hire is charged per boat.
| Destination from Tonsai | Time by longtail | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Long Beach | about 10 min | about 100–150 THB per person (shared) |
| Monkey Beach | about 15 min | about 500–800 THB per boat |
| Ranti Bay | about 20 min | about 800–1,200 THB per boat |
| Laem Tong | about 30–40 min | about 1,200–2,000 THB per boat |
Prices are indicative and rise in the evening and in rough weather. Agree the price and the pick-up time before you set off.
Luggage porters
When you arrive, porters with push carts wait at the end of Tonsai Pier. Many hotels send their own. Paths are narrow, so carts are the only way to move heavy bags. Expect to pay roughly 100 to 200 THB, depending on how far your hotel is.
Bicycles and electric carts
A few locals use bicycles and small electric carts for deliveries, but there is nothing to rent for getting around and nothing you would need: everything in the village is walkable.
